SUMMARY:Quantifying Dark Energy using Cosmic Lensing - Sarah Bridle\, Univ
 ersity of Manchester

DESCRIPTION:I will describe the great potential and possible limitations o
f using the bending of light by gravity (gravitational lensing) to constra
in the mysterious dark energy which seems to dominate the contents of our
Universe. In particular we have to remove the blurring effects of telescop
es and the atmosphere to extreme precision\, and account for possibly cohe
rent distortions of galaxy shapes due to processes in galaxy formation. I
will discuss these issues in more detail and review some recent progress i
n tackling them\, including in the context of new results from the Dark En
ergy Survey\, and the UK’s potential involvement in the Large Synoptic S
 urvey Telescope.
