DESCRIPTION:Scholars of the ancient world must deal with a wide range of s
ources\, including not only classic historians like Herodotus or Thucydide
s but also numerous minor historians who may be highly derivative of other
\, now-lost\, authors. One such writer is Diodorus of Sicily\, long studie
d almost exclusively for understanding his sources. But Diodorus was writi
ng during the time of Julius Caesar and the Roman Civil Wars\, and this pa
per will demonstrate how important it is to understand Diodorus and simila
r authors in their own historical context and how this context has decisiv
ely shaped Diodorus's view of history regardless of his sources.
