SUMMARY:Ghostly Galaxies: exploring the universe with the Dragonfly Telesc

DESCRIPTION:While there have been tremendous advances in our imaging\nand
spectroscopic capabilities over the past decades\, the low surface\nbright
ness sky remains relatively unexplored. The Dragonfly\nTelephoto Array was
developed with the specific aim of detecting\nthe diffuse emission from l
arge\, low surface brightness\nobjects and structures. The talk will discu
ss the Dragonfly\nconcept\, and highlight recent and ongoing science proje
cts.\nThe most striking early result from Dragonfly is the discovery of a\
nsubstantial population of large\, diffuse galaxies in the Coma cluster.\n
These objects are as faint as dwarf galaxies in the Local Group\nbut as la
rge as the Milky Way. It is not yet understood how these\ngalaxies were fo
rmed\, and how they are able to survive in the\ncluster environment.
