SUMMARY:DNA Sequencing and Other Applications of Engineered Protein Nanopo
res - Prof. Hagan Bayley FRS\, Department of Chemistry\, Oxford

CONTACT:Sophie Mathias
DESCRIPTION:Joint with Fitzwilliam College Natural Sciences Society\n\nPro
fessor Hagan Bayley is Professor of Chemical Biology in the Department of
Chemistry at the University of Oxford. Hagan Bayley received his B.A. in C
hemistry from the University of Oxford. He carried out his graduate work u
nder the supervision of Professor Jeremy Knowles at Harvard University\, r
eceiving a Ph.D. in Chemistry. His postdoctoral training was with Professo
r Gobind Khorana at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He then wen
t on to work at Columbia University\, the Worcester Foundation and Texas A
&M University. He joined University of Oxford as the Professor of Chemical
Biology in September 2003 and is a fellow of Hertford College. Professor
Bayley founded Oxford NanoLabs (now Oxford Nanopore) in 2005.\n\nThe talk
is entitled “DNA SEQUENCING AND OTHER APPLICATIONS OF ENGINEERED PROTEIN
NANOPORES” and is set to be really exciting\, exploring new methods of
identifying molecules\, including reading DNA on a USB stick.\n\nProfessor
Bayley's research interests lie in the exploration of membrane protein st
ructure and function\, and the use of molecular engineering techniques tha
t transform these proteins into unique measurement systems for exploring t
he chemistry of individual molecules. Of particular interest are the analy
sis of DNA at the single molecule level\, and the potential for ultra-fast
gene sequencing using nanopores.\n\nFree for all and there is a free drin
 ks reception afterwards!
