DESCRIPTION:This paper explores the British pursuit of the figure of the E
 arth in the period following the Napoleonic wars. The Board of Longitude p
 layed a key role in negotiating relations between the state and individual
  men of science in 1820s London. The paper will also examine the nature of
  precision measurement and data comparison in this critical moment of refo
 rm in the sciences.
