DESCRIPTION:Swammerdam was one of the first early modern naturalists to tr
eat insects in systematic depth and breadth. Swammerdam's achievements\, p
articularly in representing insects in minute detail\, are typically assoc
iated with his skilled use of the microscope. Through a close study of his
  1675 work on mayflies\, _Ephemeri Vita_\, I argue that Swammerdam's image
s engage a much wider set of experimental observational methods and argume
nts about how best to see nature.
