DESCRIPTION:In the traditional view of fundamental physics time is an illu
sion: it emerges as we coarse grain\, it’s not a fundamental quantity of
nature. The evident time-asymmetry of nature is held to be an accident\,
due to improbable choice of initial conditions. In collaboration with Lee
Smolin we proposed the diametrically opposed view: the hypothesis that\, i
n the quantum gravitational regime\, time is both fundamental and irrevers
ible\, as opposed to reversible and emergent. We describe a new class of m
odels of quantum space-time in which space-time itself\, as well as aspect
s of quantum theory\, emerge under natural conditions. The framework is ba
sed on arXiv:1307.6167 and subsequent papers.
