DESCRIPTION:Energy and Climate change - they're in the news\, they're 'hug
e'. Consumption is huge. Economic growth is huge. Our population density i
s huge. CO2 emissions? Huge! Potential of renewable power? Huge! Nuclear p
ower? That's huge too - and hugely costly to clean up...\nHow to fix all t
hese problems? Well\, if only everyone turned off their mobile phone charg
ers\, we'd be well on our way to a solution. Oh yes\, and let's remember t
 o drive hydrogen-powered cars\, like Arnold Schwarzenegger. That'll help.
And don't forget magnetic levitation\, that'll eliminate friction. And if
you _must_ burn fossil fuels\, good old B.P. can *neutralize* your CO2 emi
ssions if you pay them just 6 euros per tonne. \n\nPoppycock.\n\n"Every li
ttle helps!"\n\nPoppycock! \n\nTo understand these 'huge' issues\, we nee
d *numbers*\, not adjectives. \nAnd we need numbers that are simple\, huma
 n-sized\, and memorable. No millions\, no billions\, no Terawatt hours\, n
 o exajoules.\nIn this talk I'll present simple back-of-envelope calculatio
ns to see how our energy _consumption_ stacks up compared with conceivable
  _sustainable production_. \n
