DESCRIPTION:Dr Adrianne Slyz from the University of Oxford gives a talk on
the role of turbulence in star formation - see the abstract below for mor
e details.\n\nAdmission is free to CUPS members\, or £2 otherwise. As alw
ays\, wine and cheese will be served after the talk.\n\n(Abstract:) Despit
e differences in their cosmological life stories\, galaxies follow a seemi
ngly simple script for star formation: gas transforms itself to stars at a
rate which depends on the average gas surface density of a galaxy. For ye
ars\, galaxy formation simulations have exploited this simple global relat
ionship to make stars\, but nature is indicating that more than gas surfac
e density is at play. Turbulence in the star forming gas appears to be key
. I will describe the evidence for this and current theoretical ideas of h
ow turbulence shapes star formation. I will then discuss attempts to captu
re the effect of turbulence on star formation in high resolution cosmologi
 cal simulations of individual galaxies.
