DESCRIPTION:Prof Artur Ekert from the University of Oxford gives a talk on
quantum cryptography – see the abstract below for more details.\n\nAdmi
ssion is free to CUPS members\, or £2 otherwise. As always\, wine and che
ese will be served after the talk.\n\n(Abstract:) Among those who make a l
iving from the science of secrecy\, worry and paranoia are just signs of p
rofessionalism. Can we protect our secrets against those who wield superio
r technological powers? Can we trust those who provide us with tools for p
rotection? Can we even trust ourselves\, our own freedom of choice? Recent
developments in quantum cryptography show that some of these questions ca
n be addressed and discussed in precise and operational terms\, suggesting
that privacy is indeed possible under surprisingly weak assumptions.
