DESCRIPTION:Monopiles are one of the preferred foundation technologies for
use in offshore wind developments. During the lifetime of an offshore win
d turbine\, it is subjected to millions of lateral load cycles. Cyclic lat
eral loads may cause rotation and lateral deflection of the turbine struct
ure which can lead to fatigue of mechanical components and a reduced lifet
ime. The displacement-rotation response of a monopile is a function of the
soil properties\, pile properties and the applied loads. However\, the na
ture of the relationship between these factors is not well understood. The
results of centrifuge testing on model monopiles subjected to a range of
 cyclic lateral loads are presented.
