DESCRIPTION:In a world of ever increasing network bandwidth\, an explosion
  of devices and burgeoning data storage\, what could future communications
  and information technology bring?  In his presentation\, Dr Tim Whitley w
 ill introduce the long history of innovation in BT and the research that w
 e are undertaking today.  Tim will then explore how developments in the ac
 cess network and the core network\, coupled with big data analysis techniq
 ues\, could lead to new opportunities in connected communities - from refu
 se collection to traffic management.\n\nTim will finally reflect upon his 
 personal experiences from his long career in BT\, from joining as an appre
 ntice to becoming a BT Distinguished Engineer.\n\nBio\n\nDr Timothy Whitle
 y is a BT Distinguished Engineer and serves as MD Research and Innovation 
 for BT and MD of BT’s R&D Campus ‘Adastral Park’ in Suffolk\, Englan
 d. He is accountable for all aspects of BT’s Global Research and Innovat
 ion activities. From 2007 to 2011 he was BT Group Strategy Director. Tim j
 oined BT in 1981 as an apprentice engineer. Following sponsored study at u
 niversity he joined the Optical Physics Division of BT’s Research depart
 ment at Martlesham in Suffolk. Here he spent nearly ten years conducting e
 xperimental research into optical fibre amplifiers and lasers and their ap
 plication in high-speed communications systems and authored or co-authored
  over 50 peer reviewed\, journal and conference papers. Tim is the BT seni
 or manager on the Equality of Access Board (EAB)\, the independent body es
 tablished in 2006 to verify that BT is adhering to the regulatory undertak
 ings established around the creation of Openreach. Tim is also a Policy Fe
 llow with the Centre for Science & Policy\, University of Cambridge.\n
