DESCRIPTION:The Banach-Tarski Paradox is the counterintuitive fact that a
sphere can be cut into finitely many pieces and reassembled into two copie
s of itself. Of course\, you can't do this in real life\, but it's more th
an just a curiosity. In fact\, it's the start of a beautiful mathematical
story at the heart of modern group theory\, geometry\, logic and analysi
 s. I'll try to tell some of that story.
