DESCRIPTION:The determination of the structure at ambient conditions as we
 ll as the structural changes under the influence of external parameters (T
 \, p\, B\, H) is essential for the understanding of the mechanical\, therm
 odynamic\, electronic\, and magnetic properties of materials. A brief form
 al description of the diffraction from a material will be deduced. Emphasi
 s will be put on the experimental and technical aspects of powder and sing
 le-crystal diffraction. These insights such help to successfully conduct a
  diffraction experiment at a beamline without a thorough knowledge of crys
 tallography.
