DESCRIPTION:Resonant diffraction techniques are used when standard “stan
dard” powder or single crystal diffraction experiments are not providing
a complete description of the crystal structure. In these anomalous scatt
ering techniques the energy-dependence of the dispersion correction to the
structure factor is crucial for the determination of the absolute structu
re and to solve the phase problem in macromolecular crystallography. Moreo
ver\, resonant scattering can be exploited to probe unoccupied states in t
he valence band and hence help to determine the electronic properties of c
ondensed matter. In this lecture the basics of resonant scattering are int
roduced and highlighted on a few examples.
