DESCRIPTION:Spectroscopy methods are used to measure the response of a sys
tem as a function of the incident or outgoing energy. This lecture focusse
s on X-ray absorption spectroscopy\, in particular to Extended X-ray absor
ption fine structure. Such measurements can be made on non-crystalline and
highly disordered solid samples and liquids and are used to determine dis
tances\, coordination numbers\, and the kind of the surrounding neighbours
of the absorbing atom. As such\, it can provide complementary information
to diffraction data deduced from powder or total scattering experiments.
In this lecture the basics of the underlying theory and the modelling of e
 xperimental data will be presented.\n
