DESCRIPTION:Understanding the magnetic properties of materials is importan
t for fundamental and technological reasons. \nA very powerful technique t
o study ferromagnetic materials is X-ray magnetic dichroism (XMCD). The\nX
MCD signal is obtained from X-ray absorption measurements at the K or L-ed
ge(s) of the atom(s) \ncarrying the magnetic moment(s). Such data provide
information on the spin and orbital magnetization separately. \nIn this le
cture the basics of the XMCD method is introduced and highlighted on a few
  examples.\n
