DESCRIPTION:We have detected the highest redshift Carbon in the intergalac
tic medium\, a mere 1 billion years after the big bang\, at the end of an
era when the first stars are thought to have formed. The presence of this
Carbon is essential for determining when the products of stellar nucleosyn
thesis escaped from galaxies and polluted the surrounding pristine interga
lactic gas. I will discuss these observations in the context of the distri
bution of baryonic matter in Universe.\n
