DESCRIPTION:Many mathematicians who have never worked in industry find it 
 difficult to imagine life as an industrial mathematician. Many people in i
 ndustry find it difficult to imagine what role a mathematician could play 
 in their organisation. Yet many highly effective people in these companies
  are actually mathematicians quietly using advanced mathematics to solve p
 roblems that those around them don't necessarily recognise as highly mathe
 matical. I will describe some of my experiences working in a large enginee
 ring company\, illustrated with examples of some of the many interesting p
 roblems where mathematics has played a vital role.
