DESCRIPTION:In 2018 the Joint European Torus (JET) at Culham will attempt
to break its own 16MW fusion power record. I will describe the physics pr
ogress that makes us optimistic about success. ITER — the international
experiment being built in France — has been designed to achieve a full
self sustained fusion burn. This will be the scientific demonstration tha
t fusion is possible. Attention is switching to a harder question — mak
ing fusion a practical source of electricity. It is clear that fusion pow
er will make huge demands on engineering performance. As a case study I w
ill describe recent studies at Culham of fusion blankets — the primary h
eat exchanger and the place where tritium is bred from Lithium.
