  from simpler groups\, are useful test cases for studying group properties
 . I will talk about techniques for building groups from simpler ones\, and
  how these interact with properties of abstract and profinite groups\, par
 ticularly cohomological properties. I will show how to use these technique
 s to prove results about soluble profinite groups.
