SUMMARY:MACHIAN DYNAMICS: THE END OF TIME? PART TWO - Jeremy Butterfield\,
  Trinity College
DTSTART:20061030T163000Z
DTEND:20061030T180000Z
UID:TALK5800@talks.cam.ac.uk
CONTACT:Jeremy Nicholas Butterfield
DESCRIPTION:I continue my discussion of Julian Barbour’s Machian theorie
s of dynamics\, and his proposal that a Machian perspective enables one to
solve the problem of time in quantum geometrodynamics (by saying that the
re is no time!). I concentrate on his 1999 book\, The End of Time. The tal
k stresses philosophical issues\, not technicalities. This talk will also
introduce some foundational themes in classical mechanics\, especially in
the Lagrangian approach. \nI propose in the next meeting (6 November) to r
eturn to quantum non-locality\; in particular\, to finish my presentation
 of stochastic Einstein locality.\n
