  variability on a global scale\, bringing floods to some regions and droug
 hts to others. Join Dr Michael Davey as he explains the phenomenon\, explo
 res the impacts\, and describes how maths helps us understand how they occ
 ur and evolve.\n\nDr Michael Davey is a research scientist at the Departme
 nt of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics\, with the atmosphere-oc
 ean research group. He is also employed part-time by the Met Office\, in t
 he monthly-to-decadal variability and prediction group.\n\nThis event is f
