DESCRIPTION:Reactions to the word “leisure” are sometimes polarizing.
 I suggest\, however\, that a more historical view of leisure—one that re
suscitates classical understandings—may be useful in helping to better c
onceptualize the role of the arts in contemporary society\, and may provid
e arts educators a strong theoretical basis for action. In this presentati
on I offer a few brief thoughts on how the ideal of leisure might serve ar
ts educators as a galvanizing force for resisting neoliberal discourses an
d for promoting dignity and well-being.\n\nPrior to his appointment at Ari
zona State University\, *Roger Mantie* was an assistant professor at Bosto
n University’s College of Fine Arts. Prior to that\, Roger was a school
music teacher in Manitoba\, directed the Royal Conservatory of Music’s C
ommunity School Jazz Ensemble\, and conducted the Hart House Symphonic Ban
 d. His work centers on studying and promoting lifelong music making\; he e
ncourages the profession to make stronger connections between school music
\, the community\, and musical engagement beyond the school years. Author
of over 20 scholarly articles and book chapters\, Roger is the co-editor o
f _the [Oxford] Handbook of Technology and Music Education_ (forthcoming)
and _the [Oxford] Handbook of Music Making and Leisure_ (forthcoming).\n
