DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will discuss what happens when one assumes the 
 existence of a free curve of any genus on a smooth projective variety. The
 se are curves which deform to cover the variety\, while keeping a number o
 f points fixed. In characteristic zero one proves that if the genus is at 
 least one\, then the number of points fixed doesn't play a role (in contra
 ct to the genus zero case) and that such varieties are rationally connecte
 d\, although the situation is more complicated in positive characteristic.
