DESCRIPTION:Two-dimensional semiconductors such as transition metal dichal
cogenides exhibit unusually strong excitonic effects due to the reduced sc
reening of the Coulomb interaction between charge carriers at long range.
Photoexcitation experiments reveal a rich structure in the absorption spec
tra of these materials\, including lines ascribed to various complexes of
charge carriers and donor/acceptor ions. I will describe diffusion quantu
m Monte Carlo calculations of the binding energies of such complexes and I
will discuss the implications of the results for the optoelectronic prope
rties of molybdenum and tungsten dichalcogenides.
