DESCRIPTION:Earshaw's Theorem (1842) is the subject of\nSection 116 of Ma
xwell's Treatise. It asserts\nthat charged bodies in an electrostatic fie
ld\ncannot be in a position of stable equilibrium.\nHis and modern physics
texts proofs\nare interesting but not proofs.\nFor point charges the resu
lt was proved\nby Kozlov in 1986. The case of dielectric and\nperfectly co
nducting bodies is current work with\nGregoire Allaire. The interesting\n
cases are when the linearization is degenerate.\nFor dielectric and perfec
tly conduction bodies\nwe prove that this can occur only when the\nelectri
c field is constant on a neighborhood\nof the body.
