DESCRIPTION:This talk is jointly hosted and kindly sponsored by the Physio
logical Society.\n\n70% of Earth is covered in water. Only 15% of its surf
ace is not water\, desert\, ice or mountain. Most of our planet is therefo
re hostile to life.\n\nWhile humans can acclimatise to heat\, cold and alt
itude\, constrained by these capacities we would inhabit a very small port
ion of our planet. Instead\, it is our behaviour that has allowed us to re
create our desired macro and microclimates. \n\nThe technologies we rely o
n to colonise our planet have also limited our physiological adaptation. I
n the face of threats – such as in hypoxia\, drowning\, hypothermia\, co
ld injury\, hyperthermia and barotrauma – we often fall back on primitiv
e and unevolved physiological defences. These problems arise everywhere\,
from mountaintops to outer space. What are their consequences and solution
 s?\n\nhttp://www.physoc.org/gl-brown-university-of-cambridge\n\nhttp://www
