DESCRIPTION:Microalgae are of particular interest for biotechnology becaus
e they fix carbon from the atmosphere\, and can therefore sustainably prod
uce fossil fuel substitutes\, as well as high-value compounds such as anti
oxidants and pharmaceuticals. Genetic modification can increase the produc
tivity of microalgae\, but currently only limited tools exist to control t
he expression of added genes. Our lab has explored the use of endogenous g
ene regulatory elements to modulate transgene expression in the model micr
oalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. My research focuses on riboswitches\, mRN
A motifs that regulate gene expression in response to binding a specific l
igand. Here\, I show the versatility of native thiamine-responsive riboswi
tches and describe my efforts to expand the regulatory properties of the T
 HI4 riboswitch.
