DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome two CAPREX fellows from Makerere U
niversity\, Uganda to the Faculty of Education. Dr. Harriet Nabushawo and
Dr. Henry S. Busulwa are collaborating with Dr. Mark Winterbottom on resea
rch which they will be presenting as follows:\n\n*LEARNER SUPPORT IN OPEN
AND DISTANCE LEARNING: A CASE STUDY OF THE BACHELOR OF EDUCATION EXTERNAL
PROGRAMME OF MAKERERE UNIVERSITY*\n_(Dr. Harriet Nabushawo & Dr. Mark Wint
erbottom)_\n\nIn Open and Distance Learning (ODL)\, the teacher and studen
t are separated in time and space most of the time. However\, to ensure co
ntinuity of teaching and learning processes\, learner support mechanisms a
re usually put in place to keep the students motivated. The organisation o
f these services varies from one institution to another and also depends o
n the context. This paper examines the organisation and effect of learner
support services on the development of teacher competencies in the Bachel
or of Education External programme.\n\n*DISCOVERING THE WEALTH IN UNDERSTA
NDING ECOSYSTEMS INTERACTIONS*\n_(Busulwa Henry Ssebuliba & Dr. Mark Winte
rbottom)_\n\nThe need to improve understanding of ecological interactions
can enable learners to discover the wealth and opportunities provided by e
cosystem surrounding them through approaches where learning takes place ou
tside the classroom. An interactive learning resource book that advocates
for environmental conservation through biology-ecology lessons is being pr
epared to enable learners to solve simple environmental challenges and app
reciate the interdependence of the environment with human beings in conser
ving ecosystems' benefits and functions\, hence making learning realistic
 and relevant.\n\n"Download Seminar flyer":http://www.educ.cam.ac.uk/centre
