DESCRIPTION:Dr Christian Koch\, Associate Professor in Building Informatio
 n Modelling\, Department of Civil Engineering\, University of Nottingham.\
n\nIncreasingly\, digital models are being employed during the design\, th
e construction and the maintenance of our built infrastructure. In this co
ntext\, one major challenge is the consistent and on-demand updating of th
ese complex models in order to efficiently and sustainably face future cha
llenges\, such as the demographic change\, the increasing mobility\, the g
lobal climate change\, the aging infrastructure as well as the emergence o
f innovative information technologies. As estimated by the McKinsey Global
Institute\, there is a potential of $1 trillion annual savings from a via
ble 60 percent improvement in infrastructure productivity. Since a large p
art of our infrastructure environment is formed by buildings\, bridges\, t
unnels\, and road networks\, their functionality and safety has to be mode
lled\, monitored and visualized in terms of energy efficiency and sustaina
bility. In this context\, the presentation will address major contribution
s and future challenges on how to create modelling methods to capture the
life-cycle of infrastructure systems\, how to create sensing methods to ca
pture as-built infrastructure condition information\, and how to create vi
sualization methods to support decision making for sustainable infrastruct
ure development.\n\nDr Koch is an Associate Professor in Building Informat
ion Modelling at the Department of Civil Engineering. He studied Civil Eng
ineering with focus on Engineering Informatics at the Bauhaus-University W
eimar\, where he also received his doctorate in Civil Engineering on Distr
ibuted Building Information Modelling. Subsequently\, Dr Koch worked as a
Visiting Postdoc at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the US\, before
he was appointed as a Lecturer at the Ruhr-University Bochum in 2010 wher
e he headed the Computer Vision and Mixed Reality Group at the Chair of Co
 mputing in Engineering until 2014\n
