DESCRIPTION:The investment in the storage of grain stocks was done for num
erous reasons involving both commercial as well as non-commercial motives.
The ledgers of three manorial estates located in the Rhineland area and W
estphalia in the 18th and 19th century document seasonal sales behaviour a
nd the volume of carry-over stocks. In combination with grain prices of ne
arby urban markets and using the correspondence between the landlord and h
is administrator\, this paper will investigate the nature of manorial mana
gement\, looking at how much ‘rational’ investment there was compared
 to. paternalistic exchange with dependents.
