DESCRIPTION:Probabilistic programming languages are often thought of as a
point of\nintersection between machine learning and programming languages.
While\nthis is true in some respects\, they mostly occupy a gap between t
he\ntwo research areas. Technically\, correctly running all probabilistic\
nprograms requires different algorithms\, formalisms and theory than are\n
commonly used in either area. Culturally\, the gap is perhaps wider:\neach
area has its own vocabulary\, ideals\, standards of rigor\, and\nmotivati
ons\, which are often at odds.\n\nIn this talk\, I'll describe how I cross
ed the gap from machine\nlearning to programming languages\, and how I'm b
uilding a bridge back\nto the other side.
