DESCRIPTION:Seismic probing of the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary ( LA
 B) has to date been based on conversions of earthquake-generated seismic
waves. Typical frequencies used are less than 1Hz. In this study we take a
different approach and use large ( 500 kg) explosive charges recorded by
a 900 seismograph array to image the base of the oceanic plate ( beneath
eastern North Island\, New Zealand) with ~ 14 Hz waves. The sharpness\, th
e character and depth of the LAB contribute to some revised views on how
  the oceanic LAB works.
