DESCRIPTION:The observed rapid decline in summer Arctic sea ice extent\, a
nd overall thinning of the ice are not well reproduced by models. While th
ere are deficiencies in the representation of sea ice\, at least part of t
he problem lies in the atmosphere. Boundary layer clouds are a first order
control on the surface energy budget through their control of solar and i
nfra red radiation\, but are poorly represented in models. Turbulent excha
nge at the surface is also not well parameterized over sea ice. \nImprovem
ents in understanding the controlling processes - including turbulence\, a
erosol/cloud interactions\, boundary layer thermodynamic structure - requi
res in situ measurements. Here I will discuss results from recent measurem
ent campaigns in the Arctic: ASCOS\, ACCACIA and ACSE\, each taking a diff
erent approach to studying the Arctic marine atmospheric boundary layer.
