DESCRIPTION:Broad wavelength X-shooter observations of a unique AGN sample
at z=1.55 show extremely good agreement with predicted spectra of thin ac
cretion disks. The observations provide the first reliable black hole spi
n measurements for a large number of luminous AGN. They also show a clear
“spin-up” for the most massive black holes\, which indicate either un
usual evolution or a previously unnoticed selection effect.\n\nI shall com
bine these findings with new data on super-Eddington accretion\, through s
lim accretion disks\, in local and high redshift AGN. This has important
consequences to the growth rate\, and evolution\, of all size black holes.
