DESCRIPTION:I will discuss the detailed study of the Milky Way stellar pop
ulations in the context of cosmological galaxy formation - an approach som
etimes known as Galactic Archeology. The selection and launch of Gaia has
re-invigorated\nthe interest in the study of the Milky Way as a galaxy. H
owever\, although\nGaia will give exquisite information on the stellar dis
tances and their\non-sky motions stellar parameters will be known for only
  a small number of\nthe stars\, and\, worse\, elemental abundances only fo
r the very brightest\nportion of the stars. Why is this important? Stars
tell the history of\ntheir host galaxy. They are time capsules that retain
information about the\nchemical composition in the gas they formed from.
As elements are produced\nin different stars on different time scales the
y give the timing of events.\nOnly spectra of stars allow us to obtain the
elemental abundances. Such\nspectra can be obtained with eas from ground-
based observations. For this\nreason a number of heavily multiplexed instr
uments are currently being\nconstructed and several surveys are already un
der way to obtain the relevant\nspectral data. \n\nDuring the talk I will
review past findings\, current status\, and what the\non-going and future
major surveys will hold. I will especially discuss 4MOST\nand also high-l
ight a few non-Galactic topics we will cover with 4MOST.\n
