DESCRIPTION:In this talk we shall present some recent results concerning t
 he categorical properties of quandles. \nThese algebraic structures\, whic
 h are of interest in knot theory\, form a variety of universal algebras.\n
 We shall first study the properties of the closure operators corresponding
  to the reflector from the variety of quandles to its subvariety of trivia
 l quandles. The algebraically connected quandles are shown to be exactly t
 he _c_-connected objects for the induced regular closure operator _c_\, wh
 ile the trivial quandles are the _c_-separated objects. Finally\, the cent
 ral extensions of quandles corresponding to the reflector to the subvariet
 y of abelian symmetric quandles will be described.\nThe talk will be based
  on joint work with Valérian Even and Andrea Montoli.
