DESCRIPTION:We will explain how a background in mathematics is extremely v
 aluable in the patent profession\, and how rewarding (both intellectually 
 and otherwise!) a career in patent law can be. A mathematics background en
 ables you to work closely on cutting-edge technology in\, for example\, bi
 oinformatics\, audio signal processing\, cryptography\, digital image proc
 essing and software. We will describe our experiences of working as patent
  attorneys\, illustrated with examples of some of the many interesting inv
 entions where mathematics has played a vital role. We will explain the ran
 ge of mathematics-based inventions we deal with in our day-to-day work\, a
 nd will illustrate our talk with inventions devised by some successful loc
 al companies.
