DESCRIPTION:For the past three years members of Homerton College and of th
 e University Faculty of Education have been engaged in a major project of 
 educational development in Kazakhstan.\n\nResearch has multiple roles to p
 lay: It informs our negotiated programme of teacher professional developme
 nt\; it is applied in evaluating progress\; and building research capacity
  is a central feature as we support the establishment of a Graduate School
  of Education at Nazarbayev University. Moreover the model of reflective p
 ractice embodied in our programme promotes a concept of teaching as resear
 ch in the classroom.\n\nThis seminar presents an account of experiences an
 d progress to date.  It highlights continuities in Homerton’s and Cambri
 dge University’s long-standing contributions to developing school educat
 ion nationally and internationally. It reflects critically on schooling an
 d teacher development in Kazakhstan in the 21st century context following 
 25 years of independence in an increasingly globalized economy.  We consid
 er especially the challenges of school leadership in the process of change
  and modernization.
