DESCRIPTION:Conformal field theories (CFTs) defined at fixed points of the
\nrenormalization group flow can be lifted to curved space where they deve
lop\nthe well-known trace anomaly. In this talk we will consider the trace
\nanomaly of CFTs with exactly marginal operators. The couplings that sour
ce\nthe marginal operators are promoted to spacetime-dependent functions\,
and\nnew terms\, proportional to derivatives of the couplings\, appear in
the trace\nanomaly. Using both field-theoretic as well as holographic met
hods we will\nanalyze these contributions in four and six spacetime dimens
ions\, and illustrate\ntheir relevance to the a-theorem and the relation b
etween scale and conformal\ninvariance. The six-dimensional case displays
novel features not seen in lower\ndimensions.
