DESCRIPTION:The large N limit of confining gauge theories is a free limit
in terms of the physical degrees of freedom\, glueballs and mesons. This
has many powerful implications\, some of which are still being uncovered.
I will review the tension between two famous properties of large N confini
ng theories\, volume independence and Hagedorn spectra. In non-supersymmet
ric adjoint QCD\, this tension is especially severe\, and I will explain t
he accumulating evidence that it is resolved in a striking way: the theory
develops an emergent fermionic symmetry in the large N limit. Trying to
understand where such symmetries may come from has lead us to uncover rela
tions between the spectra of large N confining theories and certain 2D CFT
s\, as well interesting spectral sum rules constraining the N=\\infty vacu
 um energy.
