DESCRIPTION:*Learner Support in Open and Distance Learning: A Case Study o
f the Batchelor of Education External Programme of Makerere University*\n_
Dr Harriet Nabushawo_\n\nIn Open and Distance Learning (ODL)\, the teacher
and student are separated in time and space most of the time. However\,
to ensure continuity of teaching and learning processes\, learner support
mechanisms are usually put in place to keep the students motivated. The o
rganisation of these services varies from one institution to another\, and
also depends on the context. This paper examines the organisation and ef
fect of learner support services on the development of teacher competencie
s in the Bachelor of Education External programme.\n\n*Dr Harriet Nabushaw
o* has been involved in the field of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) as a
teacher and administrator since 2007 at Makerere University. She has don
e extensive research in the field of ODL at postgraduate levels and while
at Cambridge\, she is collaborating with Mark Winterbottom to enhance Open
and Distance Learning modes of delivery at Makerere University.\n\n*Disco
vering the Wealth in Understanding Ecosystems Interactions*\n_Dr Busulwa H
enry Ssebuliba_\n\nThe need to improve understanding of ecological interac
tions can enable learners to discover the wealth and opportunities provide
d by ecosystems surrounding them through approaches where learning takes p
lace outside that classroom. An interactive learning resource book that a
dvocates for environmental conservation through biology-ecology lessons is
being prepared to enable learners to solve simple environmental challenge
s and appreciate the interdependence of the environment with human beings
in conserving ecosystems\; benefits and functions\, hence making learning
realistic and relevant.\n\n*Dr Henry S. Busulwa* is a CAPREX fellow from M
akerere University Teacher Education programme. He has extensive experien
ce in ecosystem and biodiversity conservation education. In collaboration
with Dr Mark Winterbottom of the Faculty of Education through the Africa
Cambridge Programme\, a resource book for enhancing the teaching of Ecolog
y in secondary schools in Uganda and the wider East African region has bee
 n developed.
