DESCRIPTION:"Due to the increasing demands for integrating sustainability
within business\, manufacturing firms are paying more attention to improve
their performance in terms of economic\, environmental and social criteri
 a. The integration of these sustainability aspects within manufacturing op
erations should be done at different levels in manufacturing companies –
strategic\, tactical and operational. In this context\, the role of maint
enance is envisioned to contribute towards the integration of sustainabili
ty in manufacturing by keeping the equipment performing the required funct
ions while minimizing material and energy consumption.\n\nHowever\, mainte
nance activities of manufacturing equipment has been often giving in outso
urcing or contracted out to a third party or the equipment manufacturer. T
hese maintenance services have been mainly based on transactions\, i.e. th
e equipment user pays the service provider for getting a job done or provi
ding assistance and support for equipment operations. Recently\, due to an
emerging trend for increasing their relational perspective\, industrial m
aintenance services are becoming more focused on customer value and servic
e performance levels. Performance-based maintenance services are then repr
esenting a challenge for equipment manufacturers which are interested in e
nlarging their service offerings towards more relational and customer-orie
nted approaches.\n\nThis research investigates how industrial maintenance
can be an enabler of more sustainable manufacturing operations through its
role in the provision of industrial services. The understanding of indust
rial maintenance from a sustainability perspective is key to incorporate s
ustainable value into the new service offerings. A method has been finally
proposed to support service providers to integrate sustainable value into
their service offerings\, thus providing better customer value."\n\nMARIA
HOLGADO is a Manufacturing Engineer\, graduated at University of Seville\
, Spain. She has obtained her PhD in Industrial Engineering at Politecnico
di Milano (Italy) working on sustainable value creation in manufacturing
through the provision of maintenance services (the topic of the buns talk)
. She has been involved in the EU project SustainValue\, Sustainable Value
Creation in Manufacturing Networks\, funded by the European Commission’
s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The project aim was to develop indust
rial models\, solutions and performance standards for new sustainable and
more performing production and service networks. Her main areas of interes
 t are industrial sustainability\, sustainability-oriented innovations\, su
stainable business models\, product service systems\, maintenance manageme
nt and maintenance services. She has been a Marie-Curie Research Fellow i
n the European project iMaPla “Integrated Maintenance Planning” in Uni
versity Federico Santa Maria in Valparaíso\, Chile\, in 2009. She has bee
n a Visiting Scholar at the Intelligent Maintenance Systems Center in the
University of Cincinnati\, US\, in 2013 and at the Institute for Manufactu
ring in the University of Cambridge\, UK\, in 2014. Maria Holgado joined
the EPSRC Centre for Industrial Sustainability in October 2014. She is cur
rently involved in the REDRESS project\, funded by InnovateUK\, which aims
at investigating opportunities to increase the volume and value of textil
e recovery and driving retained value through business model and supply ch
 ain innovation.
