DESCRIPTION:G.H. Hardy published his Mathematician's Apology in 1940. Sev
enty-five years later\, it has lost none of its hold on the imaginations o
f its readers\, especially future mathematicians or those who have never k
nown mathematics from the inside. But do mathematicians recognize ourselv
es in the image it projects? Do we still understand what Hardy had in min
d when he said "real mathematicsmust be justified as arts if it can be jus
tified as all?" And why do we feel compelled to "justify" mathematics\, an
yway?\n\nThese are a few of the questions explored in Michael Harris's new
book\, entitled\nMathematics without Apologies. Harris will be presentin
g his book at the Isaac Newton Institute\, Cambridge.\n\n
