ging and Sensing - Dr Alexander Valavanis\, School of Electronic &amp\; El
 ectrical Engineering\, University of Leeds.

DESCRIPTION:Terahertz-frequency quantum cascade lasers (THz QCLs) are powe
rful yet compact sources of radiation in the 1-5 THz band of the electroma
gnetic spectrum\, with numerous potential applications in trace gas sensin
g\, astronomy\, imaging and materials analysis. The operating principles
of THz QCLs will be discussed\, and an overview of recently-developed self
-mixing interferometry sensing techniques will be presented. Future direc
tions for THz QCL research will be discussed\, including the integration o
f QCLs with other THz system components\, and the prospects for developing
QCLs using alternative high-temperature and high-frequency materials.
LOCATION:Ryle Seminar Room no. 930\, Rutherford Building\, Cavendish Labor
