DESCRIPTION:The beautiful nodal patterns of oscillating membranes\, usuall
 y called by the (incorrect) name Chladni patterns\, have been known for se
 veral centuries (Galileo\, Leonardo\, Hooke) and studied in the last hundr
 ed years by many leading mathematicians. In spite of that\, many propertie
 s of these patterns remain a mystery. We will present the history and some
  of the recent advances in the area of counting the nodal domains. No prio
 r knowledge of the subject is assumed. \n\nThis is a joint work with Grego
 ry Berkolaiko (Texas A&M) and Uzy Smilansky (Weizmann Institute)\n
