DESCRIPTION:The global thermohaline circulation of the oceans is associate
 d with a transformation of warm to cold water in the Atlantic and a revers
 e transformation of cold to warm water in the Southern ocean. In this talk
  I will discuss the role of air-sea interactions in these transformations.
  I will focus in particular on whether net heating and net cooling at the 
 sea surface\, in a given ocean basin\, is simply a response to local ocean
  dynamics or is controlled by large scale atmospheric processes.   \n
