DESCRIPTION:The continuous growth of data centers is making power efficien
 t \ncomputation a rising concern. The ubiquity of large scale-out \nworklo
ads on the other hand provides enough scale for specialization \nto become
a viable option. In this talk I will present our work on \nachieving very
high power efficiency without sacrificing \nperformance for a common data
center application by the means of \nspecialization. \n\nKey-value stores
such as memcached are commonly used to reduce the \ndemand on relational
databases\, which are much harder to scale. \nHowever\, since these key-va
lue stores are more network heavy than \ncomputationally intensive\, they
do not utilize modern server hardware \nefficiently. To overcome this inef
ficiency the use of smaller ARM-based \nmachines in large numbers has been
proposed\, but our goal is to \ndramatically reduce the power consumption
of key-value \nstores and similar applications without compromising \nper
formance. Therefor we took specialization a step further: We \npresent a m
icroserver that implements the target application \n(memcached) directly i
n hardware\, fusing network handling and \napplication-specific processing
into a dataflow architecture on an \nFPGA. As a result\, power consumptio
 n is reduced ten-fold when compared \nto regular servers. Moreover\, the p
erformance and response time of \nsoftware-based solutions is matched and
 even surpassed in many cases.
