DESCRIPTION:"Safety and reliability are commonly related to the absence of
undesired outcomes such as incidents or accidents\, or product failures.
In fields such as aviation safety\, risk management and reliability engine
ering the starting point of an investigation is shared: the occurrence of
an actual adverse outcome. However\, in aviation safety the usefulness of
investigation methods that look only for ways in which something can fail
or malfunction has been profoundly questioned. In this talk I set out to e
xplore what we can learn from these methodological advancements to provide
novel insight into socio-technical systems such as those underpinning the
successful delivery of performance-based contracts. I illustrate the conc
ept making reference to the delivery of aircraft availability in a defence
aerospace industrial context."\n\nNils E. Thenent has recently completed
his Ph.D. at the University of Bath\, UK in the field of cost estimation f
or integrated product-service offerings in aviation. He is an aerospace en
gineer with expertise in the fields of avionics maintenance and aircraft d
esign. Nils has been working with major aerospace companies\, such as Luft
hansa Technik\, Pratt & Whitney Canada\, GE Aviation and BAE Systems\, and
has presented his research at national and international conferences. His
interests include aircraft technology\, aviation management\, continuous
 improvement\, and aviation safety.
